Mobile Money Integration for Schools

Overview

Mobile Money is the dominant payment channel across sub-Saharan Africa, used by millions of parents to pay school fees without a bank account or credit card. RedeemOS integrates with the major Mobile Money networks — MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash, AirtelTigo Money, M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and Orange Money — enabling schools across West, East, and Southern Africa to accept fee payments digitally without requiring a physical payment terminal. When a parent makes a Mobile Money payment to the school's configured Mobile Money number, the payment is automatically reconciled against the student's fee account in RedeemOS and a digital receipt is generated. Finance officers no longer need to manually cross-reference Mobile Money agent reports against individual student accounts — the reconciliation is instant and automatic.

How It Works

  1. 1

The school configures its Mobile Money account number(s) in the RedeemOS Finance settings — one per payment network if multiple networks are supported.

  2. 2

The Finance module generates a unique student payment reference linked to the student's account. This reference is included on the student's term fee invoice.

  3. 3

The parent dials the USSD Mobile Money code on their phone (e.g., *170# for MTN MoMo Ghana), selects Pay Bill or Merchant Payment, enters the school's Mobile Money number, and uses the student reference as the account number.

  4. 4

The Mobile Money payment notification is received by RedeemOS via the payment gateway API (typically Paystack, Flutterwave, or a direct Mobile Money API integration).

  5. 5

RedeemOS automatically matches the payment to the student account using the payment reference, updates the student's fee balance, marks the invoice as partially or fully paid, and sends a digital receipt to the parent via SMS.

  6. 6

The Finance dashboard updates in real time, and the finance officer can see all Mobile Money payments received for the day without any manual data entry.
