An academic term (also called a semester in some systems) is the fundamental time unit of school administration, dividing the academic year into structured segments of instruction, assessment, and reporting. Most African school systems operate on a three-term calendar: Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania all use a First, Second, and Third Term structure within an academic year that typically runs from September to August, though some countries start in January. Each term has a defined start date, end date, examination period, and report card date. School management systems use the academic term as the primary organisational unit for attendance records, continuous assessment scores, examinations, fee billing, and report generation. Configuration of academic terms — including their precise dates, the number of teaching weeks, and the term-specific fee structure — is one of the first setup tasks when implementing a school management system. Different year groups within the same school may follow slightly different academic calendars.
